Positioned at the very heart of Europe, the Czech Republic enjoys a
continental climate. Heavy falls of snow are guaranteed throughout the
winter and this coupled with long periods of high pressure with cold
temperatures and clear blue skies turns the entire landscape into a
‘Winter Wonderland’ every year. It is not uncommon to find snow lying to
more than one metre deep across the higher areas of Vysocina for up to
four months of the year.
Although
becoming less popular as a means of transport, it is still possible to
find horse drawn sleds being used to carry people and their cargoes
around the smaller roads in the region.
The Czech
Republic is a ‘fun’ place for the winter sports enthusiast. Hundreds of
kilometres of well marked Cross Country skiing trails and first rate
downhill ski slopes abound throughout Vysocina. Come and see for
yourself; it is not only the height of the mountains that makes for an
ideal winter holiday destination. It is generally possible to Cross
Country ski from the door of our properties for 3/4 months of the year.
Lovers of winter
sports will find the region of
Vysocina full of convenient terrains for Cross Country skiing, suitable for all ages and
levels of ability. There are also ski jumping hills to be found
throughout the region.
The most
significant skiing centre of Vysocina is Nove Mesto na Morave, situated 15 km from our properties. Since 1934, the well-known
race "Golden Ski of Ceskomoravska Vysocina" takes place there every
year, now a regular Langlauf World Cup event. For 3 days between
Christmas and New Year the eyes of the world turn to this famous event.
For those who are
in search of skiing resorts further afield, we have listed the seven
best known downhill skiing resorts in the country below.
Krkonose,
Jizerske hory, Orlicke hory, Jeseniky, Beskydy – Javorniky, Sumava and
Krusne hory.
