Handblown glasswork has always been a part of the Highlands Region
tradition. The glasswork factory in Skrdlovice was established by
Emanuel Beranek. Beranek and his brother started using special
technology producing glass with a high concentration of bubbles. Today’s
production, with the original Beranek mark, specialises in manually
formed metallurgical glass. You are invited to see the local craftsmen
at work whilst visiting the glassworks. The factory is in the nearby
village of Skrdlovice. There is also a factory outlet where you can buy
pieces from the factory at prices you would not find in any normal
retail outlet.
On the outskirts of nearby Zdar nad Sazavou stands the Pilgrimage Church
of St. John of Nepomuk on Zelena Hora (the Green Mountain) - a
magnificent work by J. B. Santini and also a part of the UNESCO list of
cultural heritage. It is an excellent example of baroque-gothic
architecture from the 18th century, with its beginnings going back to
1720 when the Abbot of Zdar decided to honour the memory of the martyr
John Nepomuk.
The open air museum at Vesely Kopec, Hlinsko is an exhibition of
traditional folk architecture from East Bohemia. Apart from the
traditional architecture you can experience what every day life was like
in the past. The exhibition concentrates on the preservation of many
crafts which were a necessary part of daily life, such as weaving
fabrics and pottery making. There are many polygonal barns, wind mills,
saws, fruit and tow driers and other artefacts form the past on show in
the museum.
At first glance, you can see that Pernstejn Castle, Nedvedice, a massive
Gothic castle, is a strong and impregnable fortress. The original core
of the castle was probably built in the 13th century. The castle is one
of the best-preserved in the country. Its interesting architectural
detail will catch the attention of experts as well as laymen; its mazy
connecting passages and narrow staircases charming children and adults
alike.
